Shakespeare and Compagny
Shakespeare and Compagny is a bookshop which is located in the 5th district of Paris. There we can find a lot of books and novels about policy, classical litterature, fiction... All of this in english !
In the Xvth century, it was a monastery.
In 1951, George Whitman, a journalist coming from New-Jersey built a real literary circle in this place. In 1964, he named the bookshop Shakespeare and Compagny because of the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare's birth and to pay a tribute to Sylvia Beach's book : Shakespeare and Company (she was a librarian during the 2 world wars and wrote this book with her memories of the interwar).
What is specific about this bookshop ? It's that above the books rooms, there is a place where travellers can be hosted and fed in return to work a few hours a day in Shakespeare and Compagny and to write their own autobiography... This travellers are nicknamed the « Tumbleweeds ».
Thanks for reading my article and have a nice day !
